We partner with Danish designers and Designers without Borders DK to fight fashion waste.
We receive donations of high-end clothing from Danish designers. New and high-quality clothes which haven’t been sold either because of excess production or due to minor manufacturing failures. We sell the items at our store at the Elgin Railway Market in Grabouw and at our Pop-Up Fashion events in Stellenbosch.
Our Stellenbosch team all work as volunteers, and host Fashion Fundraiser events several times a year. Follow us on our Social Media where we announce the dates.
The store at Elgin Railway market is open over the weekends and used as a training opportunity for the youth in our programs. They learn about time management and dealing with customers and payments. It is also a good opportunity for them to gain experience in the retail industry and to train their English skills.
The initiative is not-for-profit. This means that all funds from the store and the Pop-Up Fashion events in Stellenbosch are re-invested in our work for the youth and the communities in need in Grabouw and Elgin Valley.
WHY WE FOCUS ON FASHION WASTE
Each year a large amount of clothes and accessories coming straight from the factories end up not being sold. Either because of excess production or due to minor manufacturing failures. After the items have been through the first factory outlets the designers are left with few opportunities to make use of or sell the clothes. This means that overproduced clothes often end up in a warehouse collecting dust on the shelves – or, in worst case scenario, is thrown on the dump. This is a serious problem considering the important goal of establishing sustainable and socially responsible businesses.
The Danish designers have entered into a partnership with Designers without Borders DK to use their unsold garments for a good cause. Our Danish partners pack the clothes in Copenhagen and send it to us in South Africa via ship.We believe that it makes better sense to convert the clothes to funds for programmes that empower and develop instead of giving it directly to the people in need.
